The moment we hear the word 'leech', a sense of fear and disgust comes to our mind. Especially in a place like Assam, where water and a damp environment prevail during the monsoon, the prevalence of leeches is very high. During the monsoon, leeches are generally found in damp places, forests, agricultural fields, or water.
Leeches usually hide in the soil, on tree leaves, or under water, and suck blood from humans or other animals at the first opportunity. Farmers often fall victim to leech attacks while working in the fields. Seeing this animal that attaches itself to humans or animals and sucks blood is truly scary. It is not easy to remove a leech once it attaches to the body. It cuts the skin with the small tooth-like structures in its mouth.
The most surprising thing is that it does not cause any pain while sucking blood, so humans do not realize it at first. This happens because of an anesthetic substance present in the leech's saliva.
But many of us do not know that this scary and disgusting animal has many beneficial properties and that various medicines are prepared from it. Since ancient times, leeches have been widely used in the medical science of India along with the rest of the world.
📌 The use of leeches is mentioned specially and in detail in Ayurveda. The ancient Indian physician Maharishi Sushruta has described the treatment done by leeches, i.e., Jalokavacharan, in his famous book 'Sushruta Samhita'. In modern medical science, it is known as Hirudotherapy and is used in hospitals in developed countries like Europe and America. There is a special chemical substance in the leech's saliva called Hirudin. This Hirudin prevents blood clotting and makes blood circulation very smooth inside the body. Besides this, there are about a hundred or more beneficial bioactive substances in the leech's saliva which help in curing various diseases of the human body.
📌 In the medical field, the following tasks are done using leeches
🟢 If impure blood accumulates in any part of the body, leeches are used to remove that impure blood. Leeches only suck impure blood from the body, as a result of which many complex diseases are cured.
🟢 Leeches are very effective in the treatment of various serious skin diseases like ringworm, eczema, psoriasis etc. The anti-bacterial elements present in leech saliva remove skin infections.
🟢 Leeches are also taken help for the cure of rheumatism, back pain or joint pain. Leeches increase blood circulation in the painful area and inject pain-relieving substances into the body through saliva. As a result, the patient gets relief from pain very quickly.
🟢 Leeches are used in modern hospitals to normalize blood circulation in joined organs or amputated parts after plastic surgery and microsurgery. It prevents blood clotting in the newly joined veins.
🟢 Promising results are also obtained through leeches in the treatment of varicose veins or swollen veins of the legs.

Although leeches look scary and disgusting from the outside, they are a wonderful creation of nature. Its medicinal properties prove that every creature in nature has its own importance. Modern science is conducting more research on these properties of leeches, and there is a possibility that mankind will benefit even more from it in the future. Along with maintaining the natural balance, the contribution of leeches to medical science is truly incomparable. 'जोंक' का नाम सुनते ही हमारे मन में एक तरह का डर और घिन की भावना आ जाती है। खासकर असम जैसे इलाके में, जहां मानसून के दौरान चारों तरफ पानी और नम वातावरण रहता है, वहां जोंकों की भरमार बहुत ज्यादा होती है। मानसून के समय नम स्थानों, जंगलों, खेतों या पानी में आमतौर पर जोंक देखी जा सकती हैं।
जोंक आमतौर पर मिट्टी, पेड़ की पत्तियों या पानी के नीचे छिपी रहती है और मौका मिलते ही इंसान या अन्य जीवों का खून चूसती है। खेतों में काम करते समय किसान अक्सर जोंकों के हमले का शिकार हो जाते हैं। इस जीव को देखकर सच में डर लगता है जो इंसान या जानवर के शरीर से चिपक कर खून चूसता है। शरीर पर चिपकने के बाद जोंक को आसानी से नहीं हटाया जा सकता। इसके मुंह में मौजूद छोटे-छोटे दांतों जैसे हिस्से से यह त्वचा को काट देती है।
सबसे हैरान करने वाली बात यह है कि खून चूसते समय यह कोई दर्द महसूस नहीं कराती, इसलिए इंसान को शुरुआत में पता ही नहीं चलता। जोंक की लार में मौजूद एक तरह की संवेदनाहारी दवा के कारण ऐसा होता है।
लेकिन, इस डरावने और घिनौने जीव के कई फायदेमंद गुण हैं और इससे तरह-तरह की दवाइयां भी तैयार की जाती हैं, यह बात हम में से बहुत लोग नहीं जानते। प्राचीन काल से ही पूरी दुनिया के साथ-साथ भारतवर्ष की चिकित्सा विज्ञान में जोंक का व्यापक उपयोग होता आया है।
📌 आयुर्वेद चिकित्सा शास्त्र में जोंक के उपयोग का विशेष और विस्तार से उल्लेख है। प्राचीन भारतीय चिकित्सक महर्षि सुश्रुत ने अपनी प्रसिद्ध पुस्तक 'सुश्रुत संहिता' में जलोकावचरण अर्थात जोंक द्वारा की जाने वाली चिकित्सा का वर्णन किया है। वर्तमान आधुनिक चिकित्सा विज्ञान में इसे हिरूडोथेरेपी कहा जाता है और यूरोप, अमेरिका जैसे विकसित देशों के अस्पतालों में भी इसका प्रयोग किया जाता है। जोंक की लार में एक विशेष रासायनिक पदार्थ होता है जिसे हििरुडिन कहा जाता है। यह हििरुडिन खून के जमने को रोकता है और शरीर के अंदर खून के संचार को बहुत सुचारू बनाता है। इसके अलावा, जोंक की लार में लगभग सौ से अधिक फायदेमंद जैव-सक्रिय पदार्थ होते हैं जो मानव शरीर के विभिन्न रोगों को ठीक करने में मदद करते हैं।
